Water Damage

Water damage with mold

Water is among the most unusual elements on earth because it naturally appears as a solid, a liquid and a gas. And in all three states -- ice, water and steam -- it can do an astounding amount of damage in a short amount of time. In fact, insurance companies say that water destroys more property than anything else during a year, with frozen and broken pipes coming in just behind hurricanes in terms of monetary loss.

But the damage can be repaired. The real danger with water is that only the visible problems may be taken care of, leaving behind unseen corrosion to appliances or the furnace. But standing water and damp wood products also provide a wonderful breeding ground for mildew and molds, including the extremely dangerous Stachybotrys mold.

The key to dealing with water damage is speed -- stopping the water flow and quickly removing any damaged materials while keeping what is salvageable. Knowing the difference is critical; simply drying out a carpet or the drywall may not be an option, at least not a healthy one.
